Getting Started With Tai Chi
One of the most frequent concerns that many people have when considering getting started with Tai Chi is that they will not understand enough about the roots of Tai Chi in Chinese philosophy in order to enjoy all of the many benefits that are associated with it. That is not necessarily the case, but it can be helpful to learn as much as possible.
Qi
Qi refers to an energy force that flows through the body. It is thought that Tai Chi makes it possible to unblock qi an encourage it to flow through the body properly.
Yin and Yang
Yin and yang are to elements that are opposing and are believed to comprise the universe in order to keep it in balance or harmony. Tai Chi is believed to promote this critical balance.
Qigong
Quigong is the discipline from which tai chi originates. This ancient discipline involves movement, breath and the mind in order to create a balance of energy that is calm and natural. That balance can then be utilized in recreation, work or even self-defense. Much like yoga, in which there are many different types, there are actually thousands of different types of qigong. There are also five major traditions. They are:
• Buddhist
• Taoist
• Martial arts
• Confucian
• Medical
In addition, there are also two major types that are known as soft and hard. Soft qigong is referred to as inner qigong. Tai chi is an example of this.
